Greenfest Brisbane

October 11, 2008 · 1 Comment

I am here! It’s great (if not a little wet…..)

I decided to attend Greenfest on Brisbane’s Southbank this year. So far I am not disappointed. I have so many exciting things to report and will cover them over the next week or so (with pictures!).  From today my favorites have been:

Open speakers festival which opened with Dr Jane Goodall yesterday (So I missed it!) and went on today to discuss biodiversity, community solar projects, Dinosaurs to Doomsday (Scott Hocknull who inspired me for my earlier blog post) and School energy projects.

Solar powered Barbeques – got to give it to the Aussies for having the priorities right!

Clay modeling in the kid’s entertainment tent.

Live music from Cat Walker (much enjoyed by my kids and me).

Body arts tent

Organic produce market.

Every time I come to one of these events I get inspired and enthused about the opportunities that green living can bring.  I am going back in tomorrow to talk to some solar guys, do some more painting with the kids and listen to the great music and lectures.  More please!

The Dinosaurs caused climate change!

October 11, 2008 · Leave a Comment

News just in – The Dinosaurs did it! So we are not to blame after all (or are we?). There are many conspiracy theories about climate change and global warming. I wanted to get my four cents worth!

It is actually true that Dinosaurs did affect their climate. The massive creatures would have warmed the environment quite nicely with their mega tone poo and frequent flatulence! Last week we were blaming cows but you have to give it to the dinosaurs this time.

The fact is this - Climate change is not new. The climate DOES change; it has always changed and always will change.  Our earth has been through many cycles of warming and cooling, brought on by many factors including solar effects, animal activity and volcanic eruptions. We greenies know this but we are not deterred!

We know that climate changes. We also know that we humans have had a dangerously greedy appetite for fuel – one that is growing as “new” centers of consumerism emerge.  It is our wild abandon for fossil fuels and love of deforestation that is causing atmospheric carbon levels to rise faster than ever before.  Few if any scientists would argue that particulate Carbon adds to the greenhouse effect so I fail to see where the conspiracy is!

I do believe that humans are playing a part in climate change. I also believe that they are not the only culprit but one can’t worry about things that are out of one’s control. What we can do is think more, use less and support our scientists so that they can work towards a greener future. After all whatever you believe surely there is nobody alive that doesn’t think that renewable energy is a good thing.
