my eco life

Little Steps

It’s funny but since starting this life changing experiment I have been noticing how many little things I do in a day that with a little attention could make a big difference to my eco life!

* Boiling the kettle 3-4 times before actually making that cup of tea (I’m English, I have tea running through my veins….)

* Buying packets of stuff, getting them home and then opening the packet and putting it in a big plastic container (Tupperware is great but excess waste is not – why can’t more food be supplied in bulk!).

* Leaving the TV on just for company (OK so this sounds rather sad and lonely, I hope I am not the only one)

* Not turning off my laptop when I go out shopping.

* Ironing all of my kids clothes only to find them on the floor or screwed up in a pile in the wardrobe the very next day.

* Blow drying my hair everyday when I am working from home.

As a busy wife, mother, employee and boss I am always looking at ways to save time and streamline my day - If I can also help the environment then I think that deserves a large Earth Friendly Gin and Tonic!

I think I have just done it!!!!! I have realized that I no longer need to Iron anything – just take it off the line and screw it up in the bottom of the cupboard – time and carbon saved: At least 250g. Everyone’s a winner.

While we are on the subject of domestics I don’t see why I need to vacuum every day either. After all, by the time the kids get home from school and tip the Lego out if you can even SEE the floor you are doing well. A little dust never killed anyone (did it?).

As for the other things I promise hand on heart that when I boil the kettle (just enough water for one, please!) I will always make a cup of tea, put my feet up and enjoy the moment.

The bulk food issue is a big one. I would really love to see tasty food in bulk buckets at the health food store. Last time I looked (two weeks ago) I couldn’t see anything that my kids and husband would like. Could the makers of those lovely nutty cluster cereals please take note? Or the people who make the rice crackers with flavour????

Well, I hope that my little contributions make a difference I will write again soon

Love

The Eco domestic Goddess (in my dreams)
